• Purpose - who will be using it (children, adults, bare feet, baby stroller) & why (leisurely walk or to get quickly from point "A" to point "B").

• Where will it be - abutting a foundation, on a slope, in a poor drainage area, poolside, etc.
• What look do you want to achieve?
• Maintenance.
